Clamping analysis of fixture-workpiece systems requires an accurate estimate of the coefficients of friction at the fixture-workpiece joints. One source of friction data is handbooks. Unfortunately these values are typically averages taken over a broad spectrum of conditions. This paper will demonstrate that for cast aluminum, friction is extremely sensitive to the geometry of the contacting fixture elements and the topography of the workpiece surface. Furthermore the coefficient of friction associated with these contact conditions is substantially greater than those reported in handbooks.
