The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of three dimensional data analysis in the verification of rapid prototyped parts. A computer aided verification application is created to perform analysis on the coordinate data obtained from both coordinate measurement machine and laser scanning technologies. To investigate and demonstrate potential measurement problems, specialized analysis is implemented in an attempt to measure shrinkage. The effects of other part defects and inadequacies in the measurement equipment drastically affect analysis results. Nonetheless, the ability to visualize and explain the three dimensional aspects of part defects is extremely valuable to the manufacturing process.
