COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES NATIONWIDE ARE EXPERIENCING DECLINING ENROLLMENT IN ENGINEEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, AND MANUFACTURING FIRMS CANNOT HIRE SUFFICIENT QUALIFIED EMPLOYEES. TO REVERSE THESE TRENDS, THE NEW YORK STATE CENTER FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY (CAT) IN AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS AT RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, AND HUDSON VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, DEVELOPED A PROTOTYPE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS MODULE (TAM). THE PORTABLE CIM SYSTEM IS LOANED TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ABOUT ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES AND ATTRACT MORE STUDENTS TO CAREERS IN ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT, CONFIGURATION, APPLICATIONS, INITIAL FEEDBACK FROM USERS, AND PLANS FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT.
