In metal forming operations such as rolling and extrusion, sharp tool surface asperities can plow the workpiece surface due to the substantial sliding velocities that develop as a result of the deformation process. To minimize associated friction and wear levels in aluminum forming processes, a fluid medium in the form of a base oil with one or more boundary additives is used. At the present time little is known about how a given additive influences plowing wear in an aluminum metal forming conjuction. This paper addresses this problem using an experimental technique previously developed by Hector and Schmid.
