IN THE EARLY 80S, NORTH ISLAND WAS DESIGNATED AS THE CENTRAL REPAIR LOCATION IN SUPPORT OF THE U.S. F/A-18 FLEET. THE DEPOT AT NORTH ISLAND CONSTRUCTED A LARGE REPAIR FACILITY DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO COMPOSITE REPAIR RECOGNIZING THE NEED FOR SPECIALIZED REPAIR PROCESSES PERTINENT TO THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY. AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF COMPOSITE REPAIR EXPERIENCE, NORTH ISLAND HAS COMPILED A DATABASE OF REPAIR INFORMATION AS A TOOL FOR ITS REPAIR DESIGN ENGINEERS IN ASSESSING DAMAGES AND DESIGNING RETURN- TO-FULL STRENGTH, PERMANENT REPAIRS TO F/A-18 ADVANCED COMPOSITES COMPONENTS. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES COMMON REPAIR METHODS PRACTICED AT NORTH ISLAND FOR DAMAGED F/A-18 AIRCRAFT ADVANCED COMPOSITES COMPONENTS. THE PAPER WILL COVER A RANGE OF REPAIR APPROACHES FROM A RELATIVELY SIMPLE INJECTION METHOD TO SOPHISTICATED SCARF PATH REPAIRS AND THE USE OF MOLDFORM TOOLS.
