This work addressed development of metal-faced composite tooling for performance at 750deg. F. Methods were explored of improving application of low thermal expansion spray metal materials for tool faces. Materials for the backup structure also were investigated to provide strength, stiffness, and low thermal expansion. An integrally heated metal-faced composite subscale tool, having a CTE of 2.7 x 10(-6)in/in/deg.F, was fabricated and cycled 100 times, from room temperature to 750deg. F, then examined for dimensional changes. No measurable changes were found, suggesting that further work utilizing this tooling system should be promising.
