CHEMICALLY BONDED CERAMIC (CBC) TOOLING MATERIALS ARE ROOM TEMPERATURE CASTABLE INORGANIC SYSTEMS THAT OFFER A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF CONTROLLED CTE, HIGH- TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE, VACUUM INTEGRITY, AND EASY FORMABILITY. THE USE OF THESE MATERIALS IN PRODUCTION, 250 DEGREES F TO 800 DEGREES F LAY-UP DIE TOOLING FOR ADVANCED COMPOSITES IS REVIEWED ALONG WITH RECENTLY DEVELOPED PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS. EXAMPLES OF MATCHED DIE CBC TOOLING FOR PROTOTYPE HIGH-PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE COMPRESSION, INJECTION AND TRANSFER MOLDS IS PRESENTED, INCLUDING A SYSTEM WHICH USES A METAL SURFACE LAYER WHICH GREATLY IMPROVES THE ABRASION RESISTANCE AND DURABILITY OF THE MOLDING SURFACE. FINALLY, VERY HIGH-TEMPERATURE CBC TOOLING SYSTEMS, WHICH CAN BE USED TO FORM METAL AND GLASS MATRIX COMPOSITES AT TEMPERATURES UP TO 1800 DEGREES F IS EXAMINED.
